Statement

Mammoth Springs in Yellowstone National Park is a surreal and otherworldly place. The unique landscape is shaped by the deposition of calcium carbonate from thermal waters that flow from underground hot springs. As the hot, mineral-rich water emerges from the earth, it cools and leaves behind layers of calcium carbonate, creating cascading, stepped terraces with intricate white and pale-yellow deposits. Over time, these formations build up into dramatic structures.

The colors of the terraces are equally striking, resulting from the activity of thermophiles (heat-loving bacteria) and various algae, which create a vibrant spectrum of hues.

Capturing the essence of Mammoth Springs and its unique visual splendor presents a wonderful challenge for a photographer. My experience of the site goes beyond its unexpected shapes, textures, and colors; it also encompasses a sense of perpetual flow, evolution, and change, with the terrain's characteristics varying dramatically from one spot to another. Having visited on two separate occasions—both early in the morning but under different lighting conditions—I observed how the colors, textures, and shapes transformed, presenting varied aspects of the landscape.

This photographic study includes wide-angle views of three distinct sections of the hill, showcasing their contrasting visual attributes. Closer shots reveal more intimate details, such as the remains of dead trees that provoke questions about their longevity in such an inhospitable environment. Are these trees truly dead, or might they still be drawing sustenance from the hot, alkaline waters?

Most of the images highlight the travertine terraces' beautiful shapes, illuminated by the early morning sun, which accentuates the terrain's amazing textures. A few images also capture the same areas under overcast lighting, providing a different perspective on the landscape.
